ANALYSIS of 4 music videos - Goodwin Theory

I found this song called "Fleur East -SAX " which is a dance -pop song and she is a female  singer, similar to our music video genre and style, so I chose to look at one of her music videos using Goodwin's textual analysis theory. The video is nearly all performance/stage based, with the part of green screen and busy background with dancers. The  background making it more interesting, asides from the obvious stylistic feature of being animated and very hyped and upbeat music video.

Genre Characteristics

Although the video is a dance video it is entirely animated, there are dance-pop features. There are several close-ups of the female singer and there is a heavy beat playing at he background which starts within 2 sec of the video. We also see Dancers at the background dancing however you don't see instruments but you see the female character singing.

Relationship between lyrics & visuals

The video fits the feel of the song which is about a boy and girl relationship and she is singing about "give it to me" in the chorus showing her confidence and shows the dominance she has over men and you can see that through the lyrics and the performance she was giving on camera. . There are lots of references to the song's lyrics throughout the video as lyrics and there is a heavy beat at the background throughout the song and you can see the female singing and dancing which compliments the performance.

The demands of a record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist, in order to make the audience more identifiable with the their target audience. In addition, the artist may also develop motifs which would recur across their work (a visual style).

Even though the video is an animated and the background, there is a  lead singer and you dont see the people who is playing the instrumental, and from the start it includes a lot of close up showing off her makeup and her hair and clothing which goes with the background and the music of the beat

Are there references to the notion of looking?

In this music video the female seems dominant as she isint wearing anything sexual or showing off her skin because she is clothed in mature clothes showing she doesnt need boys as it the song narrative is saying boys need to "pull there socks up "The lead singer is drawn wearing quite casual, not particularly feminine clothing, but her shorts are very short and there are still close-ups of her body and there is a part when she is wearing red and all her other dancers who are female showing the representing the female colour. . for example a medium close up of her waist and upwards , showing how music videos can manage to have a sexualised, voyeuristic feel even though the song seems very pop and high beat.

There is no intextuality reference in this music video as it is just a dancing music video .

I found a singer named " KDA-turn the music louder(rumble)ft Tinie Temper" who are electro song  and she is a female singer(Katy B) who is leading the song KDA is a DJ who is not seen in this music video  , this is similar to our music video genre and style, so I chose to look at one of their music videos using Goodwin's textual analysis theory. The video is nearly all performance based, with a studio based song asides from the obvious stylistic feature of the background is not animated and it is actually the background.

Genre Characteristics
Although the video is quite unconventional in that it is entirely done in a production studio, there are still dance pop style . There are several close-ups of the female. There is rapper in this video showing two different genre coming together.
We also see the camera changing settings and it is visual and you cannot see the  performing with their instruments and you only see the singer and the rapper , like we would find in many pop songs nowadays . The song seems very pop and upbeat and very retro which matches the dance moves as the song refers to "turn the music louder" which shows they are having a good time. There is no animated background which seems different and the director seems to don't mind that you can see the studio when he turns to another setting. The clothing also shows the genre it is pop as the girl is wearing very colourful clothing but it shows there is a rapper in this music video as he is dressed in black and he is wearing a large jacket referring to a rapper.
Relationship between lyrics & visuals

The video sort of fits the feel of the song which is about a having fun and turning the music louder. There are lots of references to the song's lyrics throughout the video as lyrics are very repetitive and they seemed like they were dancing around being normal as the singing doesn't go very high and fast.  This is reflected in the video as  woman is dancing with her dancers . This could be seen as quite empowering for woman, as the male rapper doesn't have dancers with him and shows that female has more power and domination.

Relationship between music &visuals

The cuts in the video often correspond with drum beats as the music is very retro and repetitive and makes the chorus very repetitive . At the more electro part of the music the performers are more dancing and there is more movements and the camera shows exactly whos singing as the camera goes to the singer or rapper and changes swiftly to the twp performers. The song is very upbeat and the camera angle is using tracking to move around the set which is divided into 4 and it is going around showing different designs. However, it doesn't show the ceiling or higher up only focuses on the performer. There are dancers who are dancing to the beat of the song and there are some choreographed dance routine. As the song continuously gains momentum, the song seems to get louder and more urgent.

Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs?

Throughout this music video there are little close ups which dont happen often but its often  there when the person is singing. Of the a female lead singer and other performer are shown when it is there part . .They are also dressed mainly in black and white and photographed in front of a red and white abstract , suggesting that the colouring of the video is intentional and perhaps a running theme for the song .

Are there references to the notion of looking?

The lead singer is drawn wearing quite casual but some feminine clothes on because she is wearing short and heels , which is very feminine, but her shorts are very short and there are still close-ups of her body. However , the camera doesn't show the close up of the clothing the male rapper is wearing as it doesn't show any voyeurism.

Are there intertextual references?

There is no Intertextual reference as this is made in the studio and it seemed like there was no high production value to this music video.

I chose this music video called "Domino-Jessie J" who is a female singer, similar to our music video genre and style, so I chose to look at one of their music videos using Goodwin's textual analysis theory. The video is nearly all performance based, and it has moving background . This song is a summer ,pop and a upbeat song .

Genre Characteristics
In this music video it is a dance -pop genre .There are several close-ups of the the female singer , how ever you dont see the instruments playing .
We also see long shots to see the background which matches the costume of the female singer. You can tell this is a pop song because she is dancing around and singing and changing costumes and the colour compliments the whole music . The clothing and styling of the music video shows it is a fun , pop music as she wears colourful clothing and heavy makeup but in a feminine way.

Relationship between lyrics & visuals

"Domino" has a beat that was described as "funky and disco-like" - The Video fits the music because it has block colours which has the same colours within her music.
The video fits the feel of the song which is about having fun and enjoying life and dancing around.

There are lots of references to the song's lyrics throughout the video for example she sings "dancing in the moonlight" where she is dancing with the beat . Throughout the whole song she is by herself there is no opposite gender and this shows the dominance of the female character. There were many close ups into the females face and her lipstick because she wore studs on her lips which the camera emphasized well. This shows her characteristics as a star image.

I found this music video called "This is how we do - Katy Perry" who  is a female pop singer, similar to our music video genre and style, so I chose to look at one of their music videos using Goodwin's textual analysis theory. The video is nearly all performance based, with more studio and moving background work .

Image result for this is how we doGenre Characteristics
Although the video is quite busy , there are still pop music  signifiers. There are several close-ups of the female singer , showing off their musical skills .We also see a wider shot of the (animated) characters like a cartoon ice cream and watermelon walking .  We dont see any instruments but we see performers
at the background dancing. The clothing and styling is very interesting as the background and the foreground is really busy and her style of fashion seems very unusual and fun which suggest it is a pop, age appropriate song. According to the director, he was trying to "fully interpret the pop nature of Katy Perry, because he hadn't done any straight down the line pop videos before. His idea was to make a pop video but to keep some edge to it, and make it feel like it was pop art. It was a studio-based shoot where we used lots of animation and props, and then each line of the song had its own little vignette. The director wanted to do something that was close to the work he has  already done. He likes mixed media, jumping between live action and animation, and he focus more on design
."
This video showed many dominance of a woman as the male is on there knees and the females are the chair this shows the power of the female in this music video. The whole mise-en-scene shows variation of colours and costume because it is quite funky and for example in this picture you can see fish floating around and it creates a scene of being in a sea.

Image result for this is how we do

Are there intertextual references?
The anime-cartoon style of the video is obviously a huge intertextual reference as it refers to a game or a character within the song.

Intertextuality

Definition-The term Intertextuality refers to the process of creating references to any kind of media text via another media text. In other words Intertextuality essentially means for a type of media(film, television, music etc) to pay homage to another media text.

Intertextuality in music videos

This Music video showed many elements of Intertexuality as it refers to many action films and super -hero characters.Camera and editing techniques are what make a music video exciting and make people want to watch it and listen to the song instead of skipping to the next one. Camera angles enable the artist the show  their feelings and body language. There a close ups during every chorus and also throughout the video, to show her anger yet enjoyment of revenge and how in power she now is with the situation. The close ups show every individual celebrity, as the theorist, Andrew Goodwin says there is a demand from the record company for lots of close ups of the main artist to put the focus of them. We see this in even the first few seconds of this music video as their is a fast zoom into her face to emphasise who she is. We see a lot of voyerism, where she is lying down and their is tracking shot, panning shot objectifying her body in a latex outfit. Editing can be used to establish a mood, such as slow motion to give a sense of sadness and deep thought but split screen to give a sense of anger or represent a split personality. Mise en Scene could also be used in this to represent a mood as her red hair at the end could be used to represent her anger

In addition to Goodwin's examples there is the idea of performance from the artist, such as lip sync in this video this occurs in the chorus as every video has a performance element, plus the lyrics match the visuals such as when she's talking about bad blood theres a fight.

The intertextuality of music videos often includes soundtracks to films and television programs which include a story line linked to the plot in the film - and often using clips and characters.

The source suggests that the references in music videos through intertextuality usually come through from cinema, fashion and photography.

The video of Taylor Swift "Bad Blood"  is the plethora of celebrity cameos and film references it makes through out. In total, the video references somewhere near 20 different movies. Mostly alluding to action and sci-fi, the video has scenes reminiscent of everything from James Bond to The Hunger Games.

This can include catwalk references and news with the use of supermodels and mannequin style females which also present and support the stereotype views shown in the media and in some songs.

The sources of intertextuality will grow with the changes in technology.  It also suggests that video games will begin to influence the contents of music videos in terms of editing and graphics to aim at a larger audience.

Image result for bad blood hunger gamesFor Example the Bad Blood music video had the split screen that is used to demonstrate half the faces of both Swift and Kendrick Lamar possibly to highlight the interrelationship with the pop style of her lyrics and the rap of the featured artist. The obscure and somewhat appealing nature of the video is extended through the use of the special effects within the editing process as it clearly follows the conventions of a typical superhero movie and movies like Kung-fu Panda action and lighting used, and this further extends the intertextuality within the music video.
Moreover, the repeated use of the titles above the characters follows the conventions of this film genre. Additionally, the use of the props and costume here presents a similarity to that of a superhero film. Also , it refers to the hunger games especially the speeecial effects are added within Swift’s video in a moment of breaking through a brick wall potentially highlighting the power of the artist and furthermore demonstrating the intertextuality.

At the beginning of the video it reference a movie :
1. The Matrix (Reloaded)   The first 45 seconds of this music video are clearly inspired by the opening scene of The Wachowski’s sequel, The Matrix Reloaded. In this scene, Trinity crashes through a window and plummets out of a skyscraper in slow-motion, a parked car breaking her fall. The fast pace/rapid editing used in the video matches the typical stereotype expected in a pop music video of how the editing is normally fast to mirror the rhythm of the song

the-fifth-element-2

In a another scene of the video the movies "The Fifth Element" is shown through:
In the following scene, Swift is dropped onto a table, wearing an outfit very reminiscent of Leeloo’s thermal bandages in the 90’s classic, The Fifth Element

Taylor is widely known for creating songs with a pop genre and normally her music video use the stereotypes expected of a pop music video. However in the Bad blood video she goes against the typical stereotypes as although she is used featured in the video her famous friends also take up a lot of the shoots as well, with some of them being frequently featured throughout.

tron-light-cycles

Later on the video you see Motor bike scenes.                                              "Tron"
Later on in the video, Swift gets into a motorcycle race with Jessica Alba. The bikes looks VERY similar to the light cycles made famous in Tron

This shows that this isint a typical pop music video with dancing and performance based video .
Taylor swift through a series of different settings, a montage which is sequenced to go with the beat/rhythm of the song. For example each time when there is a loud part/beat in the song something happens in the video to emphasize it, whether it is her breaking through a wall or someone being hit.

4. Sucker Punch
In my opinion, this entire music video is inspired by Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch. The film is about a group of young girls locked away in an insane asylum who enter an alternate reality and fight a battle to escape their fate. Though the theme of “Bad Blood” is revenge on someone who has wronged you, these girls too have entered an alternate reality to achieve their goal The bad blood music video is an example of Voyeurism as in the video Taylor and her friends are seen wearing tight clothing and dark lipstick which is associated with being erotic. Also the fact that they stare straight into the camera, like they are holding eye contact with you can be appealing to the male gaze as it is classed as being a sensual movement. As a lots of Taylor’s friends featured in the video are supermodels, well-known to being attractive this alone will appeal to the male gaze

sin-city
 5. Sin City
Before the release of the video, a series of character posters were released. These posters are heavily reminiscent of the character posters that were released for both Sin City and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Additionally, the opening shot with Swift lying on an old-fashioned car with the words “BAD BLOOD” appearing in crimson red letters seem to be an ode to Frank Miller as well. The theme Power is also exercised within the clip through the use of the low angled shots as this presents the characters as having a role of dominance, and therefore presents the narrative of the music video whilst maintaining the lyrics of the song throughout and creating a contrast to the stereotypical pop music video. The dominance of the character, and in particular Swift, is extended through the use of slow motion in the editing process of the boxing scene, this creates more suspense for the audience as it would if it was in an actual film.

Intertextuality=  The character that Taylor plays in her music video can be widely linked to the character that Britney Spears portrays in her music video for Toxic. this film reference was from "Kill Bill" . The costumes that both the women wear in their music videos are very similar as they both wear the same material and both have a consistency of black and red. However the reason behind their costumes are different as Britney uses it as a way of branding herself in a sexual way but Taylor wear the costume in order to go along with the theme/mood that the song creates. Also both the videos can be linked on the actions performed as they are both seen riding a motorbike. I think Taylor uses parts of Britney’s music video on purpose as Britney is known for being the princess of pop music so by using similar ideas Britney’s video in her own video people will compare them and Taylors image will be made bigger. Also I think that she uses parts of the Toxic video within her own because she wants to the Bad Blood video to create a new persona for herself and Toxic is widely known for Britney re branding herself.

STAR IMAGE

    Image result for miley cyrus
  1. Star image created by music companies through advertising, magazines, music videos etc, and not a real person. His theory is that they are made simply to make the company money, by being advertised for a specific audience.
  2. The star image is Richard Dyer's theory for the grouping of materials that establish a star.
Related imageThis closely shows the relationship between products that affects the selling of a product. This can include lyrical themes in songs, album covers, media coverage of the artist, live performances, and music videos.

In particular, music videos often change directors between each one but still contain elements and successful ideas that were used in the previous video. This reinforces the existing 'star image' and sometimes furthers this to expand the image by including new talents, etc.
MILEY CYRUS - she was first on screen on the disney channel called "Hannah Montana" and she was an actor more than a singer then. Later, she released a song during the disney character .

Miley Cyrus is constructed as an artificial image. The way she dresses and acts when she performs is not             “real” but is constructed by herself and her management. Miley Cyrus has many unique selling points, one            is mainly her change from a Disney Channel pop performer to an explicit pop star.

  1. Star image created by music companies through advertising, magazines, music videos etc, and not a real person. His theory is that they are made simply to make the company money, by being advertised for a specific audience.

  2. Miley Cyrus is not just known for her music, but also her outfits and for her explicit performing. She began her career on the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana, and her audience was much different to the one she has today.

  3.  Toward the end of the show Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus began to make a change in her image and her music, mainly with her album ‘Can’t Be Tamed’. And now she has changed her image much more with the release of her album ‘Bangerz’. Now that Hannah Montana has ended, she changed her record label and changed her music style as well, which has now made her into a pop star instead of just a pop performer.

  4. Pop stars make the music industry money. The more famous they are and the more fans they’ve got, then the more money their record label makes.
  5. They make the star into a popular image created by them to make them more money.  Miley Cyrus does this by changing her audience, through her music and image. Though she changed record labels, her new record label gave her a new image and gave her a new style of music in order to make her more into a pop star, and therefore give her more fans, which makes the label more money.
  6. Miley Cyrus is made to be more of a pop star by using music and fashion trends that are popular and liked by fans. Her music was changed from rock/pop songs and ballads to more hip hop/RnB oriented songs, which gave her more fans, making her record label more money. Her music video ‘We Can’t Stop’ is explicit and has been parodied, which advertises her more.
  7.  She began to wear clothing at concerts such as bikinis, attending parties with other celebrities, and is advertised a lot more now that her image has changed. Her representation is iconic now that she has made a change. Though she has been changing over the years, beginning with ‘Can’t Be Tamed’, she has made a change that has made her much more famous than she was before, her most iconic representation is her use of ‘twerking’, and her explicit clothing.

  1. The image was fully transitioned when the music video wrecking ball came out and she seems to be naked and had short haircut which surprised many audience and was on headlines through her performance in the music video. Later on she performed at the VMA which was criticized for the controversial performance and talked about till this day. This made her get more attention from many audience and different ages.

  3.  Miley Cyrus represents many attitudes. She is known for partying, smoking and drinking, and believes that they are fun things for her fans to do. Her Facebook and Twitter accounts are mainly for promoting her tour and album so that more people go to her concerts and buy her album, though she often posts things to do with her family and herself on Twitter of what she is doing.

  4.   Miley Cyrus has her own character and personality, which is to make the record label money. Miley Cyrus started out as a ‘real’ person when she was a pop performer, but because of star transformation she became less ‘real’, and more of what people like or could be attracted to in a sexual way. Miley Cyrus’ character and personality has always been a thin and pretty girl, but she was originally a fun pop Disney girl who wouldn’t do anything bad or explicit such as smoking or partying. Though now that her image has changed, she is still known for being thin and pretty but is also known for having a much more explicit personality and is known for things such as partying, smoking and drinking.

Voyeurism

Voyeurism is when it refers to the idea of looking in order to gain sexual pleasure.

Related imageVoyeurism is the idea of the males gaze in music videos, which is usually done by including a female within the music video and manipulating the camera to meet the desires of the male gaze. Theorists such as Goodwin suggest that female performers will become the target of the male gaze by using camerawork and editing to get close up shots of the body and showing a sexual treatment of the star. This can also be reinforced by the use of dancers in male artists videos in order to show the attraction to the performer.

In female artists videos, the idea of voyeurism when the male body is shown is confusing as it raises questions about how the female viewer will interpret and respond to the images shown. In some female artists videos, they do use this gaze to show that they are independent and that they can be sexually provocative and in control of the situation.

This further emphasizes that we are watching someone for pleasure.
Image result for stay rihanna voyeurismExample of a female being objectified.
An interesting example of women being objectified is Rihanna's -Stay as this features both a man and a women, but they are treated very different. So, I am going to look the music video 'STAY-RIHANNA FT.MIKKY EKKO' . In the video close up shots are shown of rihanna undressing and getting into the bath , the motion of her undressing has also been slowed down to draw emphasis to it.

This forces the viewer to watch closely. When she is in the bath there is quite a few high camera angles being used to show all her body, this is voyeurism as we are watching her in what would normally be a private situation, the high angle shots create a status, showing us to be more powerful, but also allow us to see what is being sold to us.
Related image
Throughout the video we continue to see closeups on parts of the body which are attractive to men, ie her lips, the back of her neck. the camera also focuses on the tattoos behind her neck and it moves slowly so that viewers can see that clearly. I have noticed that her makeup is very neutral and it shows the nudity of the music video as it suits the music video.

Related imageFurther more when we are introduced to the male character there are no such closeups, and we first see his back from a low angle showing men has authority, and we see a long shot of him sitting on the side of the bath, he also doesn't get in the bath as Rihanna does, showing an equality in the way they are being treated. Interestingly the lighting is also very different, he is in darkness for a lot of his shots whereas Rihanna has bright light on her for her performance, also showing a difference in who is being sold and showing there sexuality more.

Music Video Director -Emil Nava

Best 2015 Effective Music videos- Pitchfork

From the pitchfork list the top 20 music video in 2015, I have chosen are analysed and I am going to find out why they are the top, what I can learn from this and how I can carry this to my own music video.I think the most effective music videos have a mix of the following features :   Instant impact, Non-linear editing , A sense of development , Strong sense of artist identity,  An engaging performance , Extremes, binary oppositions and repetitions , Are visually striking, Provoke a reaction, Different layers of meaning and  References to popular culture.

At the beginning of the music video you see the location, where there is a black cage with a little girl and a man opposite each other . this gives the audience some sort of tension as the song arrives quickly zooming into the little girl and mans face. as they walk around the man and little girl are dancing around, this gives us a an isolation and haunting feeling about the scene. it makes the audience question why are they dancing in a cage?what does the cage represent ? Who are the characters in this video? throughout the music video you can sense some uneasiness and a unsettlement ,this come through of the expression used and the lyrics of the video.
The camera seems like it is hand held inside the cage, it is very edgy and it is moved by the hand. But outside the cage using track shot . No zoom in has been used around. The mise-en-scene  the lighting in this video is very light and doesn't have a dark atmosphere , which may connotes the fact that the characters might be a positive
This video is very powerful, what I assume in the video is that Sia represents ( Subconscious mind/Maturity( mature people doesnt change easily)/peace) Maddie represents (Alter ego (demon)/ Conscious mind/ child (children can change)/ energetic) Cage represents: Small blockage of mind (small area of mind/narrow mind Origin of two distinct thoughts Sia & Maddie (thought  Their first glance/analysis on each other. Start of showing each other’s power. As  (Maddie) knows she is weak, she screams to make thought one scare.  don’t want to listen to her. (Maddie) is terrified of not having control. They crawl like an animal to fight & to show their dominance. After some years (teen age) it gets the power to beat thought 1 (positivity).
Years after years, we have awaken Demon under us …. It reuins our life aims & adds distraction. Now Our mind tries to defend ourself from negative thoughts.  Demon look of Maddie tries to save itself by climbing the cage. But gets tired as we are no more concentrating on it.
Years later (adult age around 25-40)  As the topic is again touched.  He tries to control it in a friendly manner. She analyze it too. She still think that is wrong/ its over rated. She bites him as disagreement form the friendship.  She feels correct in doing so.  Now he is angry & want to end forever.  He struggles to settle her. She leaves him/ gets out to get the broader view about life. Get’s out of the narrow mind/ cage. **The fact is she was “discomfort” / She represents – struggle, truth, Life reality.

He is tired of living in comfort zone ( the cage) as now he has to pay the higher cost of it. Years later After seeing a broader perspective Maddie come back to the cage.  She hugs the maturity.  He entertain her as he feel good to meet a new developed thought/ Aim in life.  He feels sad for the pathetic condition he has made in the cage. She knows that to reach big aims the mind has ever thought, she has to take the body out of the comfort zone/ narrow mind. Body Age is around 45-65 the thought is Very scared & he feel he can never get out of the cage as its too late  Moral: Don’t be Stubborn, keep on changing with situation, before its too late ;) / Though I personally feel its never too late.
I also think that there are other meanings because
Sia was the embodiment of thought and reasoning (adulthood) while Maddie was the embodiment of freedom and carefree nature (childhood) all in the mind (cage which can also be formed by society among other factors). The dance I believe was meant to portray that the two cannot always co-exist in harmony. While your mind wants to be free it is still restricted to reasoning, thus they fight.

Your reasoning fights your freedom and carefree nature, trying to tame and control it, but the mind will always long for freedom and thus will never be tamed no matter what angles or whatever methods you use (sia using chains against maddie where she resists and escapes, then he tries to use the gentle approach to which he was bitten). Reasoning will get angry and lashout at this side of you, but you cannot truly hurt or banish your free side no matter how much you want, but your free side can injure your reasoning quite easily but truly wishes not to (notice how many times Maddie kicked him and threw him against the cage, but Sia could barely touch her. His hands are cut and bruised from the countless fights, but Maddie barely has a scratch).
There are then times that reasoning and freedom are harmonious, resulting in bliss. They have truly accepted one another for what they are and are not. They realize they both need each other fundamentally. At this point your freedom will try to pull you into other things, but while your freedom is as it says, free, your reasoning and thought is not. At this point I believe that it was intentional that the cage gaps was indeed big enough for Shia to slip through, but it was all in his head why he couldn't truly leave (the cage). The freedom is there, urging you and tugging you to step outside your cage, showing you the way, but your reasoning is forever trapped in the cage that your mind created (to why tears formed for Shia in the end, he saw the way but he could never leave). Freedom is puzzled and wants to understand why you cant leave but cannot due to her nature. Reasoning wants to understand how freedom can leave but cannot due to his nature. And so it will be an everlasting fight.
The more I watched the video the more I understood why SIA chose those actors to play those roles. The expressions needed to convey those ideas is not something you come across everyday (especially the last scene). It truly is unfortunate that some of us see it as something twisted instead of the piece of art it is supposed to be. She sees the cage, she walks around in it but it never restricts her movement, she rarely even touches it lest for entering and exiting the cage. Reasoning on the other hand interacts with the cage quite frequently. He climbs it, shakes it, punches it to show his interaction with it.)
