Q4- Evaluation

Q3-Evaluation

Question 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

For this task, I was required to pitch my initial music video idea to the rest of the class, who fall into my targeted audience range (14-25).
This was the feedback that I had received in the pre-production stage and this helped me understand my audience's preferences in relation tot he music genre that I had chosen:

In this pitch I discussed the themes and locations chosen, the narrative and performance elements of the music video then after my classmates gave me and my pair suggestions and their point of view.

Here the feedback given;
"Good dancers are needed and reliable actors and actresses"
"Good locations picked and good storyline so far"
"The colours and mise-en-scene should go well together "

There were some questions asked from our initial pitch like:
"How are you going to make the narrative and performance match?"
"What if the weather is really bad and you need sunshine in your music video as it is based around the summer vibe?"
"What shots will you do in a skate park as there is alot going on?"

Me and my pair took into consideration of the feedback we was given and made some adaptions to particular elements of the music video idea making it better suited to our budget. and time.

Focus Groups/Pitch Feedback

During the editing session our group showed our video to the class giving them a visual insight to the work that we have done and how we have created our idea into an actual product.

This feedback was very important because the class was a stratified sample of our target audience and their reaction to the video reflected the whole audience.

One comment by a classmate was
"the use of bright colours as the song is quite vibrant and upbeat which suits the theme of the sing ."
"Great performance by the actress "
" The locations are Amazing and some lighting was very professional and pleasing to look at "

We also received some critical feedback such as
" some shots were very basic and repetitive "
"the narrative should be more clear to the audience"

With all the feedback we received some improvements was made examples of the improvements made were adding coloration and adding effects to make it more interesting to look at and adding on more footage of close ups and other locations at the other half of the video so that it evens out everything and creating a muffled introduction to the song instead of using two different songs.

Editing (Rough cut) Feedback

All the feedback that I have received in the production of this advanced portfolio has enabled me to improve the quality of products. I was important for me to know my target audience preference in order for my products to appeal to them. Additionally it was essential that my stratified sample audience (the class) were reliable sources as they represented the whole audience of my products.
With the negative feedback that I got, although I was able to apply it to the music video and hopefully it turned out better than last time. I have taken them on board and will apply them to the next production to improve the quality of my products further.

TASK 8 - Research and Planning the CD/DVD cover and Advert Pitch

Question 3:What have you learned from your audience feedback?

This was the last feedback task in this portfolio. The feedback was related to the print product package.
This feedback was important to acknowledge what my audience think about the products made making me understand what my audience like.
This also gave them the ability to see how the ideas that I have pitched earlier in had taken from.

 Post Production Feedback

EXTRA Feedback from Family + Friends

This was the 2nd pitch done in this advanced portfolio. This pitch was to portray the initial ideas for the CD covers and advert. The layouts, colour schemes, distribution methods, font , photography and location was discussed.

The feedback that I got for this task had allowed me to understand what my sample audience thought about what I was aiming to achieve.

One comment was ;
"you should add some throughout the whole music video . "

All the feedback from this pitch helped me directly appeal to the targeted audience through the CD package and advert and also to be immediately identified on the market.

Q1- Evaluation

Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In our music video it challenges some of the conventions for example it follows the theory of Goodwin
Goodwin states that there are 6 main conventions of a music video. These are the relationships between visuals and lyrics , relationship between visuals and music , genre characteristics , star Image , Voyeurism and Intertextuality .

Performance

When researching existing Zara Larsson music videos one convention we particularly highlighted was the use of performance. We identified from our research that in not only Zara Larsson videos but other pop artists there is live performance or choreographed dance in the majority of videos. However instead the artist sings the lyrics of the song into the camera and dances to the beat showing different types of emotion, when planning we decided to use this convention as it occurs throughout the majority of the videos and is therefore an important and familiar convention .

In the majority of our video the singer looked directly into the camera singing the lyrics of the song and also dancing to the song.
Also Andrew Goodwin said that record labels demand a number of close ups of the artists in music videos and this is what we have done.

Locations

Another aspect of pop music videos are the locations. When researching Zara Larsson existing videos, we identified that the videos for this artist in particular were filmed on just one location and it was more in a studio based song where it had a lot of green screen production involved . However this was simple and it still had a summer vibe to the video because the use of colours and effects. We looked closely at the video "Heart skips a Beat" A song from the artist Olly Murs who is a Pop Singer , and this video was filmed around parks and mainly skate parks . We used this convention by filming parts of our video in the park and skate parks however because our location (The park) was a bit plain because of the too much greenery so we developed this convention by filming in other places too .

We feel this development worked as we kept the locations realistic and they are all in relation to each other and made sure that it linked with the genre and the lyrics. The locations we used included a basketball court , the park, the skate park.

Because the song of this artist has a Music video which doesn't have a narrative we decided to add a narrative which challenged us to do our own research on the typical stories conveyed in typical pop genre music. This Video doesn't have much of location changes and we had to develop conventions from the artist’s previous products in order to create a new video for our chosen song and look at other pop genre music to make the video interesting and appeal to the target audience. After researching existing products, my group has identified codes and conventions of music videos and through planning and production we have attempted to use, develop and challenge these aspects.

Editing

Our research of pop music videos showed that this music video was fairly fast paced and animated with lyrics. We discovered this was due to the editing in which shots are fairly short and a simple cut is used between each shots.

When planning, we decided to also use short clips and we planned to make some of the lyrics pop up to make it more of a pop genre ,also adding shorter cuts nearer to the end of the video so that it quick and it is not boring and it goes with the beat.

However, in production although we have used this convention with the majority of our shots being short, we have developed this as in a few particular shots as we pan around her singing to the camera and there there are many close up shots to define the lip-syncing.

In Zara Larsson Music video she starts of with a shot of her wearing a heart necklace and she takes it off and throws it  in which then she starts singing which sits the whole song because its about having fun. In our video we used the unravelling of a necklace but it a different way by doing a scene of a date which where the girl doesn't like it and its about moving on. There are some scenes where the singer in our music video where she is being funny and just dancing around and not lipsyncing to the video gives an element of fun to our video associating to the upbeat pop music genre.

Final DigiPack

This is my final digipak, I am overall really pleased  with how it went because I think it really showed what I wanted to show in terms of her versatility with the artsy effect. I decided to stay with the graffiti theme as that is recurring in our music video and i thought that this would make them link well.

Website Research 2

   Ellie Goulding

I wanted to look at the artist Ellie Goulding because she is a solo pop singer , which I thought I could link with my own work.

On her website , the homepage is very vibrant with the pastel blue background and the artist herself is on the front page. The theme has a Blue and Gold theme to it. When you first log on to Ellie Gouldings website a pop appears which allows its users to make an account on the website. This will add the user on a mailing list where he/she will receive exclusive information such as, pre-sale concerts tickets, tour dates and even personal messages from Ellie herself.

The website follows some common conventions such as
links to the artists social media sites such as Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, iTunes etc. There is also and option to make an account, along with options to see her music, biography, videos, music, photos and her store where merchandise of the artist can be purchased. This means that the artists followers can access her music easily through social networking and through her website , which then promotes the artists itself. To get her music , there is a tab which then goes on to this page, where you see the image clearly , with a play button in the middle with the song name clearly written in ,which is Gold.

As you go more into her website the colour scheme carries on, with the blue and gold elements. The tabs at the top are easy to see and accessible.

There is also a live twitter feed on her page , to see what she is up to and if there is any update about the music and the artist .

The background picture used is the album cover of her latest album "Halcyon Days". The website also follow the same color scheme as the album throughout the website.

As you scroll down cubic boxes hold news and information about Ellie such as the release of her album and pictures of the artist and also links to watch her music videos. The the font used in her name on the top is same font used in most of her albums too.

In the strip below the website has the logo of the Ellie's record label along with the privacy policy, terms of use etc which is a common convention followed by most websites.

Website Research 3

Little Mix

I chose to look at the band Little Mix website as they are a pop group which i decided to take inspiration from as my genre I am working with is Pop music.
There Homepage is the picture f the band, showing off there personalities as it is important especially for a band , as it takes time for fans to connect with the artists. I like the structure f this homepage as it has the tabs and links in the middle in white so it is clear for users. The colour scheme in the website is pastel pink and purple. The colour may signify the personality within the group, as fun, girly and aimed at a younger audience.

This is a the tour link where is drops down in the middle of the page, In pink . It is nice and clear where you can read the texts clearly so it is easy to use. When clicking each of the dates , it leads you to a area where you can buy the tickets.
The website is easy to navigate and use.The home page of the website is a platform which holds all of the most up-to-date information about the band. This involves the latest, albums, videos, pictures, and concert dates. By having all of this information together it results in the website and the band being very accessible to the consumer.

As soon as you go onto the music page, there recent music video pops up where you can see the band but cannot hear the music unless you click it.It then leads you on to the you tube page, this allows more promotion to the band as then you can see there other music video which is promotional for them as a band.

The drop down Buttons are clear and easy to use, this will help younger kids to get what they want easily as there audience are younger. The tabs is not too busy and confusing ,but very simple and organised, which I will be taking forward into my website.Having simple but effective design. The header of the website is the band name in the official font. This creates synergy across all of their different media texts and makes the band name recognisable. The home page also has a link to the bands Instagram account with the latest photo published being placed central on the page. This quickly provides visitors to the site a source into the private lives of the band. Modernly, fans of bands and artists are increasingly interested in their private lives. This may be due to social media as the bands are now able to access their fans on a truthful and personal level opposed through magazine.

I wanted to investigate more , so I looked at there page called "The Girls" which i thought it was interesting because there was a pictures f each of them , and as you hover the mouse on top it shows the names of each of them like so...
And when you scroll down you can each interview they have done, this makes the fans know better about the artist and have a connection.

Website Research 1

Ariana Grande Website

I wanted to look at the artist Ariana Grande because she is a pop solo artist , which I can relate t my own work. The social updates section in website gives hyperlinks to Ariana's Twitter and Instagram. Her most recent tweets are posted on her website.
In the bottom there is an option to load more of her tweets. In the strip below her record label "Republic Records" is featured along with the privacy policy and terms of use which is an convention as it is done in other websites of artist.

There is also a Merch section , where her fan can scroll to, when I was investigating the website, I found it easy to move around and it was easy to navigate. This I will need to consider in my work.

There is also a gallery page of the artist , where fans may look into or follow her through social media, which is important in a website as it promotes them and there music.

It is important to have the album theme running through the website as it shows clear visuals and photos of the artist.
Also the name and the title of the artist should be clear . The drop down buttons are easy to use and very accessible. Her website seems to have a black, white ad some hits of pink colour scheme t it, which i will consider when making my website.
Image result for ariana grande website                                                                                          Further down there is an option of to view more of her music, for fans who want to know more about the album.

An option to watch her most recent music video "Everyday" is available on her website along with her old music videos. This will allow may people to become her fans and share the music video.
Further down a playlist embedded by the help of soundcloud features popular songs of Ariana along with options to buy her songs or albums from iTunes, Google Play and Amazon and also share it through social media links such as Facebook and Twitter.
Further down there is an option of to view more of her music, for fans who want to know more about the album.

Digi Pack initial ideas

Displaying IMG_2237.JPG
Displaying IMG_2234.JPG

These are the few sketches of the CD within the Digi pack. The ideas are based on the music video so that it links with the digipack. As the video has a vibe about summer I came up with some ideas to include that aspect. Also, in the music video there are graffiti in the skate park so linking that with the digipack was important.

DigiPack Analysis 3

The colour scheme used throughout this album is monotone with black white and grey, both colors connotate royalty and mystery and also elegance and strength of a women. From the way her head is tilted, "Dangerous Women" you can instantly tell the fierceness of the look  as you can see pictures of the artist looking straight at the camera , this idea is also been shown on the CD where it is just plain black keeping it simple . However there is also the use of the head accessories shows her personality  which could connate innocence and purity.

In the front cover you can see Ariana wearing revealing clothes which looks sexual ,and it is interesting as she names the album "Dangerous Women" and it shows that she is proud to show ff her body and she is a women and it is not to get attention.
l positioning herself in a way that her body is evidently shown. The theory of the Male gaze can be discussed here in which Laura Mulvey talks about the audience views the artist from heterosexual males point of view. She might have done this to get rid of her young girl image and wanted people to see her as adult. The plain background and minimal writing on the cover connatates that she wants herself to be the center of attention. e.g. her name and album cover are not very visible on the cover.

In this music video ,there is only audio , and this is her song called "Dangerous Women"
She has her album name at the front with her signature of her name at the top , the font looks like it’s been written and also has a very girly element to it. Kurining has been used in her name which is her signature style and can be seen in a lot of her other albums.
These two fonts have also been use the listing of her song names in the back of the album, song name in kurning and song length in sunshine in my soul. The songs are aligned to the centre so there is less empty space and copyrights and warnings about pirating the album is also given in the back. The photo is zoomed in clearly showing her face , but as the star image goes she is known for head accessories in which her fans will buy it which promotes the album more.
I like the way the album follows one colour scheme and this helps in establishing the relationship between all three things and also how simple yet gripping and inspirational .

Digipack Analysis 2

n       This analysis I will be looking at Rihanna's album called "Loud".

The Front Cover

Rihanna's front cover is definitely eye catching as the colours used are bold and compliment each other well. The use of red connotes the idea of passion and seductiveness which could link to the lyrics of some of the songs.
The use of red objectifies Rihanna, especially due to the red lipstick that she is wearing which portrays her as a sexual object which makes her subject to the male gaze.
The cover compliments the typography as it says 'Loud' and the image supports this as red is a loud colour and the tone of her hair, red lips and blushed cheeks fill the image.
The beauty shot of Rihanna fills the whole cover so she is the whole image which in turn makes us focus on her, fulfilling the element of star persona since the cover is all her. I find it interesting that Rihanna has not included her name on the cover, however I believe that her star image is so strong that she does not need to.

The CD

The CD follows a floral theme which is first seen in the backdrop of the CD with Rihanna leaning across a red rose bush. The pale pink colour contrasts the bold red back drop which could signify another side to Rihanna and her music, a softer more gentle side. The CD contrasts Rihanna's front cover image especially as the pale colours on the CD vary from the bold provocative image

Red Hair and Red Lips attracts the Male Gaze.

Typography is simple and white to stand out among the bold background colours.
The images are provocative and attract the male gaze as Rihanna is dressed in underwear and is showing alot of skin. However she is dressed in white which connotes innocence and purity so it could demonstrate the difference in her music. In her music video, Red is common as it used as a correction, and which her digipack has a red theme going on showing connection and theme.

The back cover continues the pale pink theme that compliments the CD. The typography of the tracks listed are in the same font as the title 'Loud' which makes it consistent. Rihanna continues to build star persona as the majority of images are of her.
The poster continues the colour theme, being red. The bright red colour continues to symbolize lust and passion as well as making Rihanna the focus of the poster. In the middle poster Rihanna's eye contact is towards the audience which is to yield them in and is far more effective than the other two posters in my opinion. Also , this theme come from her song "Only girl in the world" which shows that the theme is Running through the music video and digipack. The text is simple and in capitals which automatically at a glimpse grabs your attention. The poster is also engaging as it says 'coming to a city near you' which makes the poster more personal to fans.

DigiPack Analysis 1

This is the artist Katy Perry Album named "Teenage Dream" and this is the Digi pack That I am going to analysis .

Does the design/layout reflect the style of the artist?

The design does reflect Katy Perry as her pop genre is quite feminine and fun-loving and the font and design is cheerful and reflects the whole “candy land” theme, with the “o”s being replaced with a white and red candy.

This also reflect the topic of star image as she is always presented as wild, fun and girly.  The whole design has impression/connotations which reflects her songs.

How is the packaging laid out?

What information does it give?  The cover has the name of the artist clearly printed at the top centre and the name of the album below the picture of Katy Perry. This I will be considering into my digipack. It also had a advisory logo telling us that some songs will contain some explicit content, as some have inappropriate lyrics which some audience might not like as it I not her target audience. Also, in our music video , there is no explicit language so I will not need to include this feature.  The track list contains all her singles in capital letters so it is easy to read. This page also has the company's logo at bottom right corner telling us who have produced her album, which I will include on my digipack.

What is the title of the album?

What meaning does it give to the image on the front cover – are they linked?  The title of Katy Perry’s album is “Teenage Dream” which is also the name of one of her singles in the album, and the cover images are linked to the single “California Gurls” also in the album. The name of the album “Teenage Dream” may connote a young males teenage dream with the provocative image of Katy Perry. The font style also has candy theme suggesting that her songs and herself is sweet. Also, links with the theme of Voyeurism as she uses her femininity as a main feature in her digipack.

How is the artist represented in the images?

The     Katy Perry’s digipak for her album Teenage Dream :  the main images are consistent to her music video for the single “California Gurls”. The images show Katy Perry on pink clouds as the theme of the music video “California Gurls” is a surreal interpretation of a candy land . She sexualised as she is naked but does have some innocents to her by her being on pink fluffy clouds. The surrealism also represents Katy Perry as youthful and fun-loving with the pink clouds and candy theme being consistent on each side of the digipak and the CD discs.

What colours are used and why do you think they might have been chosen?

The house colours that have been used are predominately pink, blue and red, they were chosen to correlate with the “California Gurls” music video. The baby pink and the baby blue are feminine and youthful and this is what Katy Perry represents. The pastel colours also make the image of Katy Perry stand out drawing the audiences attention towards her. The pastel pink and purple is shown through the music video and her digipack, this feature I will consider within my work.  The link is shown through the colours.
